Many of Mathias Waske’s works follow visions. In the work “Blind Dinner”, a nobly dressed couple sits at a white table. A distinguished waiter serves a meal. A violinist provides soulful background music. Everyone wears a black mask. They are blind. The scene takes place in a parched landscape. The ground is furrowed with dryness, the branches of the tree are withered. Snowflakes darken the atmosphere. The mood is hypothermic. Candle flickers hint at a breeze. The pink shellfish on the silver tray looks like lobster. On closer inspection, it is a larger-than-life scorpion, eager to use its venomous sting. Civilisation seems to have disappeared, but the last of the rich are still being served dinner.
